Faith Like A Mustard Seed

“Then the disciples came to Jesus in private and asked, “Why couldn’t we drive it out?” He replied, “Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.” -Matthew 17:20

Having faith is an interesting thing.  We can’t see it, we can’t always feel it, but it can bring about so much.  Jesus compared faith to a mustard seed.  A commonly used herb in biblical times.  These teeny tiny seeds, smaller than many others, when planted would grow into a tree.  The mustard seed would yield not just a strong or large plant, but a TREE!  That is some analogy Jesus used for our faith.  If our faith is even as small as a mustard seed, just imagine what it can do!

If your faith is small today, be encouraged.  The Lord does not require us to begin with a bountiful field of faith for His Spirit to move.  Our faith can start small like a seed and when watered and tended to, can become more than we can imagine.  I encourage you to start where you are.  Don’t be discouraged with all of the “what ifs” and doubts - those are actually sin.  Believe that God is who He says He is and that when we have faith in that, He will answer. Here’s a little BOOST for your faith today.  They’re stories of imperfect people who were recognized in the “Hall of Faith” in the Bible. Hebrews 11

Lord, thank you for each person reading this devotional today.  Thank you for giving us all faith and reminding us to put it to work.  Please show us how to trust you more and believe in faith more certainly.  You are a faithful God and we want to live lives that exemplify that! In Jesus name, amen.
